The Velvet Lounge music series at Rock City Cafe, 316 Main St., will offer acoustic strings the first weekend of June. The live music will run Friday and Saturday, June 7 and 8, from 7 to 9 p.m.

On Friday, the Velvet Lounge will present Velocipede. Hailing from the great state of Maine, Julia Plumb (fiddle, viola, foot percussion) and Baron Collins-Hill (mandolin, tenor guitar) play original and traditional fiddle tunes from New England, Quebec, Appalachia, Scandinavia and the British Isles. They play with a tight, close sound, staying true to the tunes and bolstering them with driving dance rhythms and sweet harmonies.

On Saturday, the Velvet Lounge welcomes back the Ale House String Band, comprised of Brian Dunn on mandolin, April Reed-Cox on cello and Oren Robinson on guitar. Originating as a happy accident at a Midcoast tavern, the Ale House String Band performs anywhere within a day’s ride and can be found happily picking, plucking, bowing, strumming and singing away in a plethora of venues.

As usual, there is no cover charge; however, tipping the performers is highly encouraged. For more information on this and other events happening at the coffeebar/cafe, call 594-4123.
