The downtown Left Bank Books will host a poetry reading with several local poets whose works appear in the new anthology “Take Heart: Poems from Maine” edited by Wesley McNair, Saturday, June 1, from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

As the current Maine Poet Laureate, McNair has collected verse from his popular "Take Heart" column, featuring a poem each week in 30 newspapers across the state. McNair writes that it is his mission as Maine Poet Laureate to find new ways of bringing poetry to the people, “reminding them in the process that it is not only for special occasions, but for every day of our lives."

The anthology’s poems are about longing and pleasure and death and love, poems that will inspire tears and laughter — from visionary poets who understand the heart of Maine values and experience.

Those who will assemble to read from their own work at Left Bank are Elizabeth Garber from Northport, Linda Buckmaster from Belfast, Carolyn Locke from Troy, Bob Brooks from Stockton Springs, Tom Moore from Brooksville, Lynn Ascrizzi from Freedom and Dave Morrison from Camden. The anthology also features poems from living Maine poets such as Jay Davis, Martin Steingesser and Carl Little, as well as classic favorites from Elizabeth Coatsworth, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, May Sarton and Edna St. Vincent Millay.

The public is warmly invited to attend, but seating is limited. To reserve a chair or copies of the book for signing, call 338-9009 or drop by Left Bank Books at 109 Church St., open daily. Dogs are welcome.
