The June meeting of Maine Media Women will take an unusual turn when the group meets to make greeting cards for distribution to United States servicemen and women overseas. One does not have to be an artist to make these collage-style cards, and the meeting is open to anyone who wishes to participate in this activity.

The event will take place Saturday, June 1, from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. at the Mobius Center on Business Route 1. The regular meeting fees of $5, $3 for MMW members, will be used to defray the cost of materials.

MMW member Carol Jaeger will coach the group in how to decorate the cards. Paper and other materials will be provided by Jaeger’s business, Salt Bay Art Supply in Damariscotta, and by Phyllis Milstead, coordinator of the local branch of From Our Hearts. FOH is a nationwide volunteer organization that makes and ships cards to the troops several times a year.

“This seemed like a wonderful way to conclude our year of media- and communications-related programs. The fact that most, if not all, of the cards we make will soon be in the hands of our troops far from home gives a special meaning to the communication aspect of our work,” said Genie Dailey, President of Maine Media Women.

Maine Media Women is a 62-year-old nonprofit organization whose members include writers, artists, photographers, graphic designers, editors and publishers, website designers and specialists in broadcast, print, and electronic media. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7.
