Coastal Senior College had a record turnout for its 2013 annual luncheon May 4 at Samoset Resort in Rockland. More than 100 people attended to hear the speaker — award-winning journalist and author Colin Woodard — talk about his most recent book, “American Nations.”

The occasion also was an opportunity to honor the many volunteers who do everything from instructing to serving on the board and helping as class assistants.

CSC is one of the largest of the 17 senior colleges in Maine with sites from Boothbay to Camden and sessions in the fall, winter and spring. With its home base at the University of Maine at Rockland, CSC donates money annually for scholarships to deserving students to attend URock. Scholarships for membership and tuition are also offered to those seniors who want to take a class and need financial assistance.

Seventeen classes were offered in the spring session along with a number of ongoing classes such as a writers’ group and a social change discussion group. The last class, on the lobster industry in Maine, will begin May 23 and meet in Boothbay.
