At the GFWC/Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs Spring Convention held in South Portland May 10, Jean Lawrence, a member of the Waldoboro Woman’s Club, was presented a certificate and monetary award for being selected as the first place winner in the 2013 GFWC/ Maine short story writing competition.

Her submission “Sedony’s Story” is a fictional account of the struggle of a young Waldoboro widow in the late 1700s to save her farm for her children.

Attending the presentation were Alice DePatsy and Judi Lawrence, Waldoboro Arts chairman and president, respectively.

Lawrence, a retired educator and personal biographer, has written several books of local history, including "Citizens Who Heard the Call to Political Service: Waldoboro, Maine 1777-2010" and "Richard Remembers Dutch Neck."

Her poetry has been published in The Goose River Anthology for the past four years. She has just completed "The 175th Anniversary History of the Waldoboro Fire Department," which will be released in June.
