U.S. Cellular plans to replace the existing 107-foot-tall communications tower at 143 Rankin St. with a new tower about the same size, according to property owner Brad Carter of Rockland.

Carter said U.S. Cellular wants to replace the 50-year-old structure before installing new equipment to make sure it is sturdy enough to withstand wind and weather.

The planning board will review the project Tuesday, May 7. The exact time of the meeting has not yet been set.

Carter said the cell phone provider hopes to complete the work this spring.

The tower is located next to the former Maine Department of Transportation engineering office building, which was built in 1962. Carter bought the property about four years ago. The building is currently occupied by Korinnsdance, a studio that provides Zumba and other dance instruction.

The transportation department originally built the tower for radio communication. It has more recently been a provider for Midcoast Internet Solutions.

Carter said he has contacted neighbors of the property about the project.
