The following is a synopsis of the 2013 Vinalhaven High School baseball team:

Coach/years coached current team: Matt Slivinsky, 11th year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 3-9, sixth in Western Class D. The Vikings did not qualify for the playoffs.

Roster: Senior Shane Carlsen (pitcher, outfield, infield); juniors Byron Thomas (pitcher, infield), Zeb Campbell (pitcher, outfield) and Dalton Hornby (outfield); sophomores Avery Waterman (pitcher, outfield), Noah Slivinsky (catcher, pitcher, infield), Ben Beckman (pitcher, infield) and Everett Webster (third base, first base); freshmen Lewis Cray (pitcher, infield, catcher) and Jason Moody (outfield); and eighth-graders Cody Hamilton (infield, pitcher), Liam Thomas (infield, pitcher) and Kaleb Campbell (infield, outfield).

Outlook: Eight of the Panthers 13 players are new to the team, five of whom have not played organized baseball for two years and the other three of whom have no prior baseball experience.

In a nutshell, it may be a trying season for the islanders, though coach Slivinsky is optimistic that the Vikings "could surprise some teams" this spring.

"They are young and inexperienced, but there is a core group there with some baseball experience that knows how to play that are pretty good players," said Slivinsky. "I think a lot of it is going to come down to pitching and defense."

The Vikings have no experienced pitchers as their top two hurlers from last season — Brian Stanley and Steven Osgood — graduated in June.

The coach said the Vikings may be aided by the fact that Western Class D is "down" this year, though the veteran coach feels Valley of Bingham, Richmond, Greenville and Buckfield "are all very good squads."

However, with only 13 players on the roster, everyone on the squad will have to be versatile and play several positions.

"It's going to be tough for us to win, but I'm not counting us out," the coach said.
