The following is a synopsis of the 2013 Camden Hills Regional High School softball team:

Coach/years coached current team: Marty Messer, fourth year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 7-9, 10th in Eastern Class B. The Windjammers were downed by No. 7 Ellsworth 11-2 in a preliminary playoff game.

Roster: Seniors Taylor Palmer (third base), Megan LeGage (outfield), Emily Turner-Watts (outfield) and Amy Haynes (shortstop); juniors Hannah Corney (pitcher), Natalie Hamalainen (catcher), Jordan Stephens (outfield), Hannah Bode (outfield) and Bekah Hilt (first base); sophomores Annie Young (outfield) and Paige Morgridge (outfield, pitcher); and freshmen Kristen Kieran (second base), Maddie Bowman (catcher, outfield) and Juliana Haynes (outfield, pitcher, second base).

Outlook: The Windjammers have a solid mixture of savvy veterans — five returning starters from last year's team — and three talented freshmen who will "be playing a lot," said Messer.

"This will be the overall fastest team I've had on varsity," he said. "We'll be very strong up the middle with Natalie as a catcher [who] started [there] last year, Ames Haynes at shortstop, who is one of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference's best infielders and speedy Megan LeGage in center field."

The Windjammers will miss KVAC second-team all-conference selection Abby White, who tore her Anterior Cruciate Ligament during the girls soccer season, but have plenty of depth and talent to counteract her absence and could qualify for the regional playoffs for the third straight year after a 13-year postseason drought.

"We're looking to improve from last year's prelim loss to Ellsworth and hopefully make it to the Eastern Maine [Class B] championship [game]," said the veteran coach.

Messer said Oceanside, Medomak Valley, Gardiner and Nokomis of Newport will be more than formidable foes for the Windjammers this season.
