Traffic concerns prompted Rockport Planning Board members to take no action April 10 regarding a proposed 12,000-square-foot hospice house. The proposed hospice would be a seven-bed facility housed on Pen Bay Medical Center property.

Rockport Police Chief Mark Kelley raised concerns about the traffic pattern, stating the planned location of the entrance to the hospice house off the existing drive of the hospital is too close to Route 1.

Kelly also addressed issues with an access road directly to Route 1 that, according to architects, would become gated after construction of the hospice house. The access road would then be maintained as an alternate emergency exit from the hospital property. Kelly said he feels the planned placement of the gate is too far from Route 1 and could cause a further traffic hazard if a driver tried to turn around and get back on Route 1.

The planning board next meets May 8.
