The following is a synopsis of the 2013 Vinalhaven High School/North Haven Community School softball team:

Coach/years coached current team: Doug Littlefield, second year.

Last year's record/playoff information: 3-9, fifth in Western Class D. Lost to No. 4 Greenville 30-5 in five innings in the first round of the playoffs.

Roster: Juniors Molly Foisy (second base, outfield), Ashley Hamilton (shortstop, catcher) and Melanie Bazien (outfield); sophomores Ashley Davis-Oakes (pitcher), Taylor Littlefield (first base, shortstop), Virginia Wadleigh (outfield, pitcher), Danielle Newton (outfield), Hayley Bryant (outfield) and Tracie Webster (third base, catcher); freshmen Emily Baird (outfield), Hannah Jo Moody (second base, outfield), Sarah James (second base, outfield), Maddie Hallowell (outfield), Gina MacDonald (outfield) and Hallie MacDonald (utility); and eighth-graders Bailey Wadleigh (pitcher, third base, outfield), Jenae Cray (outfield) and Hannah Ames (catcher).

Outlook: For the Vikings, despite having six players on the roster with little to no experience on the diamond and having no seniors, things "are looking pretty good," said Littlefield.

The team's goal is to improve on its record from last year and return to the postseason. While Richmond and Greenville will be strong, the coach said the islanders expect to be competitive with most of the other Class D teams on their schedule.

"We should be a lot stronger next year, but we'll be alright this year if everything goes right," the coach said.

An interesting note is the Vikings will play at Buckfield on Saturday, April 27. The Bucks are coached by Jess McGreevey, a Buckfield native who started the Vinalhaven softball program a few years ago.
