Island communities can be a hard place to get to know people. Deep family roots in the land and in the sea can make it, at times, difficult to become one within the community when you’re from away. This may be true on Vinalhaven, Matinicus and the other islands but here, on North Haven, it doesn’t seem so. Although from away (at least I’m a Mainer with a little island connection) I never felt these things. This has allowed me to get to know the community in a more personal way over the last eight years on this rock. People help their friends and neighbors in times of need, rally behind the sick, the newborns and those who have lost a loved one. Unfortunately, for our tight knit community, that is what happened Tuesday, March 26.

Tragedy befell North Haven on Tuesday. A young, energetic friendly soul was taken from our island only to remain in spirit and the fondest of memories. Evan Hopkins is his name; he is a son, brother, grandson, uncle, cousin, friend, man and so much more. Those whom Evan touched are in a deep state of mourning and North Haven mourns with them. We, as a community, are there for any and all of them and just as we are we all know that they will be there for us in the future.

Evan’s life will always be remembered on North Haven and will be celebrated on Saturday, April 6, at 11 a.m. at the village church here on North Haven. Evan’s family has set up an email address, for those who wish to express their support, share stories and photos of Evan and his life. While Evan makes his way into the ether, a new life has made its way to North Haven. Her name is Addison.

On March 20 Glen and Liza Marquis became the proud parents of Addison Lee Marquis. Addison came early to Mr. and Mrs. Marquis and the whole island. Despite being due April 16, this adorable little peanut made her way to this world and home to North Haven a little over three weeks early. This beautiful 5 pound 5 ounce package has brought with her rays of hope, love and excitement for North Haven.

As we look to the future we embrace new life while we mourn the loss of another. I feel confident saying that the whole community is there for the Hopkins’, as well as the Marquis’. Our sympathies and joy go out to both families.
