The class of Class B last year was too talented for the competition, while host Camden Hills, a relatively young squad, received exposure to topnotch high school boys court competition during the 11th annual Allen Insurance and Financial High School Tennis Challenge, a preseason tournament Friday, March 29 at the Midcoast Recreation Center.

When the matches had been settled, Falmouth, the reigning state Class B champion, had beaten the Windjammers 5-0 and Gorham 4-1. The Rams also bested Camden Hills 3-2. Gorham is the defending state Class A champion.

Thus, Falmouth won its second straight Windjammer-hosted tournament.

Historically, the event has featured the reigning Class A and B state champs, along with the host Windjammers.

The Windjammers finished 9-3 in the regular season last year and earned the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Class B playoffs. Camden Hills was eliminated by No. 6 Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft 4-1 in the regional quarterfinals.

The preseason event originated in 2002 when Camden Hills coach Chris Walker-Spencer and MRC's John Lippman, a former Windjammer tennis coach, and Steve Crane, the former CEO of the Allen Agency, wanted a way to bring a strong boys tennis presence to the Midcoast.

"This was a great opportunity to expose Camden Hills players to the upper echelon of Maine high school tennis," said Walker-Spencer.

"I also saw many positives in the performances by players throughout the team. As we continue to develop technique and match toughness, we'll improve rapidly."

The results from the matches were:

The coach said Burstein earned his first high school match win over Martin. "Luke battled in both matches [he played] and took an important step in learning to compete at the high school level," the coach said.
