Friends and neighbors were saddened to learn of the death of Glenna Wade Plaisted, Riley School’s founder and director. A celebration of Glenna’s life will take place at the school Wednesday, April 24, details to follow. Folks who wish to honor Glenna’s life and her dedication to so many issues may make donations to the Glenna Wade Plaisted endowment fund through Riley School, P.O. Box 587, Rockland, ME 04841.

Town Manager Search Committee

Thanks to the 26 people who applied for this position and congratulations to the seven selected: Will Gartley, Kim Graffam, Peter Hall, Tom Cox, Kathleen Meil, Jan Rosenbaum, Betsy Saltonstall. Select board member Tracy Lee Murphy is the town liaison responsible for setting up the initial meeting of the committee.

Municipal meetings

Meetings are at the town office unless otherwise noted.

The Ordinance Review Committee will meet Tuesday, March 26, at 7 a.m. and the Investment Committee at 2 p.m.

The Budget Committee will meet Wednesday, March 27, at 6 p.m.; the Zoning Board of appeals at 7 p.m. (tentative), both meetings at the Opera House and the Midcoast Solid Waste Committee also meets at 7 p.m.

But, soon! Town Clerk Linda Greenlaw reminds residents that the second half of 2012-13 town taxes will be due Tuesday, April 16. Don’t complain! You get and extra day because Monday, April 15, is Patriots’ Day, a legal holiday in Maine and Massachusetts (for state filing, too, but not federal anymore). When you pay this second installment of your taxes, ask about the “Tax Club,” a process that allows you to pay your town taxes in 12 equal installments instead of two.

Poets’ Corner with local poets George Chappell and Jim Ostheimer will meet Thursday, March 21, at 4 p.m. The workshop is open to the public and welcomes all levels of ability.

Later, at 7 p.m., members of the Dirigo Toastmasters Club (Belfast) will present “A Night of Inspiration” with members of the Special Olympics, past and present athletes and volunteers who will present their Toastmaster Speeches, which are short inspirational speeches.

Tuesday, March 26, at 6 p.m. enjoy “Cine Francais,” the French Movie Series hosted by the Rockport Library French Club, Then, Wednesday, March 27 at 7 p.m., travel to Newfoundland with photographer Peter Ralston as as he shares the story of his recent trip to Newfoundland and the Islands of Grand Bruit and St. Pierre through words and his exquisite photography.

National Ag Week

Aldermere Farms national Ag Week Poster contest open to students in grades 3 to 12 in the five towns schools ends tomorrow, Friday, March 22. All posters will be on display later this spring, May 11, Calf Unveiling Day.

It’s magic!

Magician Rick Bernard will perform Friday, March 22, at 6 p.m. at CRMS cafeteria. The program is designed for the whole family and promises to be a lot of fun with all proceeds to benefit the CRMS eighth-grade Japanese Exchange Program.

The Farnsworth will hold a special Ukrainian Egg Decorating Family Workshop (children 8 and up), with instructor Lisa Socher on Saturday, March 23, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Gamble Education Center.


Wildlife biologist Phil deMaynadier will lead a presentation on spring butterflies at MNC Tuesday, March 26, at noon. Phil will introduce the audience to a variety of butterfly species who will be arriving “home” to Maine (an area abundant with native butterflies) after spending winter in the South. Ahhh! Spring equinox happened, we’ve already hit more than three hours more daylight, all’s right with the world. The March full moon will occur Wednesday, March 27. The many names for this one include Worm Moon or Crow Moon or Sap Moon and since it’s the full moon nearest the equinox, it’s also called the Paschal Moon.
