A handful of Camden Hills skiers took part in a pair of prestigious regional competitions in recent weeks, with Windjammers Crockett Lalor, Lydia Morin, Cole Ellison and Jake Davee representing the Midcoast on the Alpine trails.

Lalor, Morin, Ellison and Davee participated in the Eastern High School Championship Alpine Qualifier March 2 at Black Mountain in Rumford, while Lalor and Morin's efforts at the qualifier earned them spots on the state Alpine team at the Eastern High School Championships March 8-10 at Cannon Mountain in Franconia, N.H.

Lalor and Morin also were named Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference first-team all-conference, while Ellison and Brendan Carey were second-team all-conference. Ellison, along with teammate Eben Kopp, were named to the league all-academic team.

The qualifier featured the top Alpine finishers from Class A, B and C from the state high school ski championships last month, with skiers competing for the chance to represent Maine as a member of the state Alpine Team at the Eastern High School Championships.

Of the four Windjammer skiers, Lalor and Morin both qualified for the Eastern High School Championships, while Ellison and Davee also participated in the qualifier.

Racers who finished among the top 10 in either giant slalom and/or slalom in each class at the state meet earned the right to participate in the qualifier, while the top 12 overall placers for both the boys and girls at the qualifier earned the right to be on the state Alpine team at the Eastern High School Championships.

For girls, Morin finished ninth overall at the qualifier, scoring 15 points. Mount Abram's Elise Luce finished first among 26 competitors with two points.

For boys, Lalor finished 13th at the qualifier, scoring 18 points; Davee, 15th with 27 points; and Ellison, 16th with 28 points. Falmouth's Alexander Gowen finished first among 38 competitors with two points.

Lalor, despite finishing 13th, earned a spot on the team by virtue of another participant opting not to take part in the championships.

Points were scored at the qualifier by virtue of each skier's placing in the event, thus the lowest combined score won the qualifier.

At the Eastern championships, Morin finished 47th in the giant slalom and 59th in the slalom, while Lalor finished 35th in the giant slalom and 31st in the slalom. The second run of the men's giant slalom was not run due to lack of daylight.
