The annual Mussel Ridge Hoops Tournament, a youth basketball event for third- and fourth-graders (and some second-graders), will be played Friday through Sunday, March 15-17, with a bundle of Midcoast teams slated on the hardwood at St. George School.

The double-elimination tournament begins Friday and will conclude Sunday with the boys and girls championships.

The boys and girls tourneys consist of four area teams: Georges River Bucs, Medomak Valley, Thomaston Blazers and the host St. George Dragons on the boys side and Medomak Valley, Rockland, Thomaston Bobcats and the host St. George Dragons on the girls side.

Both St. George teams will open the tourney Friday night, with the St. George girls facing the Thomaston Bobcats at 5:30 p.m., followed by the St. George boys hosting the Thomaston Blazers at 7 p.m.

A full slate of games will follow Saturday, starting with the Georges River Bucs facing Medomak Valley boys at 9 a.m.; followed by Medomak Valley facing Rockland girls at 10:30 a.m.

All eight teams will continue to battle through the day in the event, which will culminate Sunday.

The boys final will tip off at noon Sunday, with an "if necessary" game set for 3 p.m.; while the girls final will tip off at 1:30 p.m., with an "if necessary" game set for 4:30 p.m. The "if necessary" girls final would be played at 3 p.m. if the boys game is not necessary.

The Mussel Ridge Hoops Tourney is the St. George Parks & Recreation Boosters most significant fundraiser of the year. Concessions also will be available at the games.

The cost for spectators for the event is a one-time fee of $4 for Saturday's day of games. Admission is free Friday and Sunday and for children ages 12 and younger.
