The great heron rises
In early winter air,
Stillness, and dim sun
Silver on wings!
Wing strokes
Are heart beats.
Farewell, great spirit
I loved.
Catharine S. Baker of Spruce Head wrote this poem following the death of her husband, Nicholas Snow, in late 2012. She said it was her attempt to "let his spirit fly."
