The Penobscot Bay YMCA Sailfish enjoyed top-tier performances at the Maine State YMCA Swimming championships March 2-3 in the Stanley M. Wallace Pool at the University of Maine, as Midcoast youngsters earned several individual and age-group first-place finishes during the weekend-long event.

The Sailfish compiled 10 first-place finishes and may have narrowly nabbed second-place honors during the state championships scoring, at this moment at least, six more points than third-place Mount Desert Island YMCA.

According to Sailfish coach Hodding Carter there is a chance the Sailfish will drop to third place due to a discrepancy in the scoring. Should there be a change in the team scores or overall standings, it will be updated later in this story.

The Long Reach Swim Club at the Bath Area Family YMCA finished first with an incredible 3,066.5 points.

First-place finishers for the Sailfish in the state meet included Morgan Bagnall (25 backstroke and 50 freestyle) for the 8-and-younger girls, Audrey Scott (50 breaststroke) for 9-10 girls, Kyle Crans (100 butterfly) for 13-14 boys and Sam Conlan (50 free, 100 free and 100 free relay), Angus Carter (100 free relay), Brady Hedstrom (100 free relay) and Tor Denny (100 free relay) for 9-10 boys.

The combined boys and girls team scores (this may change slightly if final scores are adjusted due to new information) included: Long Reach Swim Club/Bath YMCA, 3,066.5; Penobscot Bay YMCA, 1,991; Mount Desert Island YMCA, 1,985; Down East Family YMCA, 1,908; Mid-Maine Dolphins, 1,645; Bangor Y Barracudas, 1,474; Waldo County YMCA Bluefish, 1,386.5; Northern York County YMCA, 1,304; Casco Bay Regional YMCA, 1,302; Kennebec YMCA Stingrays, 1,177; Sanford YMCA Titans, 1,057; Twin Cities Swim Team, 1,002; Canoe City Swim Club, 976; Pine Tree Swim Club, 964.5; Boothbay Region YMCA Dolphins, 394; and Piscataquis Regional YMCA, 292.5.

Sailfish swimmers who have qualified for the New England championships by reaching qualifying standards this season are Morgan Bagnall, Anabel Carter, Helen Carter, Eliza Carter, Emma Gutheinz, Eve Gutheinz, Ivy Merriam, Audrey Scott, Emma Vannorsdall, Julian Abaldo, Angus Carter, Sam Conlan, Kyle Crans, Brady Hedstrom, Connor Hedstrom, Alden Mason, Eddie McCluskey, Mark McCluskey, Connor O'Farrell and Cooper Russell.

The New England YMCA Swimming Championships will be over two weekends at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. on the following dates: Saturday, March 16, ages 13-14 and ages 15-18; Sunday, March 17, ages 11-12 boys and girls; Saturday, March 23, ages 9-10 boys and girls; and Sunday, March 24, ages 8-and-younger boys and girls.
