Camden Hills seniors Calan Bragg and Coleman Powers were each eying another trophy for their respective cases as the duo participated in the 49th annual New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships at the Providence Career and Technical Center in Providence, R.I.

While both Bragg and Powers logged wins at the prestigious tournament, it was Powers who rose to the occasion, nabbing all-New England status.

Powers, who also won the 145-pound state crown Feb. 16 at Fryeburg Academy, earned All-New England status by virtue of his top-six finish in his weight class over the weekend. Powers went 4-3 on the weekend.

Powers dropped his first match 4-1 to Scott Mcquiade (Chelmsford, MA), ending early his chance for a New England title by sending him to the consolation bracket.

From there, Powers won his next four matches before losing his final two, finishing sixth overall.

Powers also took first in his weight class at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B championships Jan. 26 at Cony High School and won the Eastern Class B title Feb. 2 at Maine Central Institute.

Bragg, who won the 132-pound state title Feb. 16 at Fryeburg Academy, went 1-2 on the day. Bragg finished fourth in his weight class at the KVAC Class B championships Jan. 26 at Cony High School and fourth at the regionals at MCI.

Camden Hills coach Pat Kelly praised both grapplers, reiterating how difficult a task it is to qualify, let alone win a match.

"Just to make it to that level means you've got to be a high accomplished wrestler to make it there," he said. "And [in Powers' case] to go down there amongst the 20 to 30 competitors in each weight class and come out top six, it's quite a statement for a young man [to make]."

Full results for both grapplers include:

132 pounds — Bragg lost to Pharoah Eaton (Fairfield Warde, CT), 8-3; beat Max O'Dell (South Windsor, CT), 11-9; lost to Steve Cerrone (Bellows Falls/Hartford, VT), 6-2.

145 pounds — Powers lost to Mcquiade (Chelmsford, MA), 4-1; won by major decision over Josh Fontanez (Portland, CT), 13-2; beat Jackson Howarth (Marshwood, ME), 1-0; pinned Stewart Buzzell (Monmouth, ME) at 4:23; lost to Tom Grifa (Silver Lake, MA), 4-3; and lost to Nolan Veins (Bellows Falls/Hartford, VT), 3-0 to finish sixth.
