Lincolnville Police Chief Ron Young is seeking answers in the investigation of a reportedly self-inflicted gunshot wound that Young described as "not accidental, but unintentional."

Young said he was in Belfast on the afternoon of Feb. 20 when police there received notification that Waldo County General Hospital had admitted a patient with a through-and-through gunshot wound to his left foot.

Young said he responded to the hospital upon learning the incident reportedly occurred in Lincolnville.

Jason Roberts, 32, of Brooks, told Young he shot himself in the foot in a gravel pit on Route 173 in Lincolnville while loading a .22 caliber bolt-action rifle with his finger on the trigger. Young said Roberts reported that the weapon involved that belonged to a friend who he subsequently declined to identify. Additionally Roberts said he could not provide Young with directions to the scene of the incident, but could "take [Young] there" at a later date.

"The gun was within inches of his foot when he pulled the trigger," said Young.

Roberts told Young his friend, the owner of the weapon, was present at the time of the shooting. Young said Roberts reported the only shot fired from the gun — which was new — was the one that injured him.

Directly following the incident, Roberts wrapped his foot in a towel and drove himself to Northport where he met a family member that drove him the remainder of the way to the emergency room at Waldo County General Hospital, said Young.

Roberts has a lengthy history of brushes with the law in Knox and Waldo counties, said Young. Previously published reports indicate that Roberts has been arrested for a variety of offenses, including a marijuana arrest in 2007 after spotting planes located numerous marijuana plants growing on Roberts' property in Jackson.

On Feb. 21, officials at Waldo County General Hospital would not verify Roberts was a patient there, citing hospital policy.

Feb. 26, Young said Roberts had been released from the hospital and indicated there are pending charges against Roberts for violation of an order of protection from abuse.

Young said he is seeking any information on the exact location of the Lincolnville gravel pit where the shooting allegedly occurred. He can be contacted at Lincolnville Town Office by calling 763-3555.
