The day was overcast, with 30-degree temperatures, but the ice was plenty thick — 18 inches in some spots — which made it perfect for Midcoast youngsters to enjoy a few hours of outdoor fun during the Mike Sabins Memorial Youth Fish & Game Association's bi-annual "Hooked on Fishing" event Saturday, Feb. 23 at Ayer Park on Seven Tree Pond.
The four-hour event was sponsored by Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and attracted dozens of youngsters and their families.
Instruction, equipment and ice-fishing refreshments were provided. There was no fee to attend as families enjoyed their time in the Maine outdoors — and caught a few fish in the process.

Scot and Mary Sabins again were the event's hosts. The Sabins are the parents of Mike Sabins, a young man who had a passion for the outdoors, who died in motorcycle accident several years ago.
The Sabins also sponsor a summer youth fishing event at the same venue. The next one will be June 1.
Mary said the event began in 2004 as a summer/spring event and she and her husband started doing a winter event as well a couple of years later. Last year was the first time the winter event was not held due to dangerous ice conditions.
The Sabins have held 15-16 youth fishing events over the years.
