A new program at Appleton Village School brings together students with members of the community to experience activities they may not have the chance to try otherwise.

Fun Fridays, as the program has been dubbed, is a new enrichment program for third- to eighth-grade students. One Friday a month, volunteers lead various activities for students — activities from snowshoeing to computer animation to knitting are part of the offerings.

The program kicked off in January and Fun Fridays will continue March 8, April 5 and May 10.

"It's been a huge hit with the kids," said Cheryl Morin, a third-grade teacher.

Morin said the students are split into small groups for the activities and each group has children of all ages.

Farnsworth Art Museum joined the program to offer activities. Morin said she also is hoping that eighth-graders will become interested in leading their own activities.

On Feb. 15, students participated in Italian cooking, collage, drama, African culture, the computer animation program Scratch, tessellations, weaving, knitting, still life photography, snowshoeing and candle making.
