The coyotes shrieked last night
Guttural chirps and wails
Under a starlit sky
Just before midnight.
Big-boned Maine coyotes
Wolves, they say, in their blood.
The dog, for once, shut up
The cats trembled.
Tonight
We were all alive.
In a dying world.
