The Camden Hills ice hockey squad has experienced a sensational season and that campaign continued with a split of two recent road games and will conclude with one more regular-season affair and then the regional playoffs.

Camden Hills lost to Maranacook-Hall-Dale-Winthrop, a combination of three Class B/C schools which form a Class A team) 7-2 on Feb. 18 at the Bank of Maine Ice Vault in Hallowell and secured a 5-2 victory over host Orono Feb. 19 at Alfond Arena on the University of Maine campus.

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Western Class B, Camden Hills (14-3, 105.2623 points) is second, while Greely of Cumberland (13-4, 119.9074 points) is first in the seven-team region. The top five teams qualify for the regional tournament.

The first round of the playoffs will be Tuesday, Feb. 26, with the Nos. 4-5 teams squaring off, with the Nos. 1-3 squads earning byes to the semifinals. The semifinals will be Friday, March 1 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, with the regional final slated for Wednesday, March 6 at the same site.

It appears as Camden Hills has the second spot sewn up and will face either Yarmouth or York in the playoffs, but some of that has yet to shake down. No. 1 Greely will play either York, Cape Elizabeth or Yarmouth in the semifinals.

Feb. 19 game

The Windjammers bounced back from a loss the previous day to notch a 5-2 victory host Orono.

Grayson Szumilas scored two goals and Cal Robbins, Stephen Hand Chase Matteo all one for the Windjammers, while Robbins added two assists and Hand and Jack Orne both one.

"Good bounce-back win after a short turnaround from Monday's loss," said Windjammer coach Karl Enroth.

The coach said "Robbins played a lot of minutes and he had to play all three zones. Defensively marking some of their speedy forwards who like to release early out of their zone for scoring opportunities and then moving the puck from the defensive zone toward their end of the ice."

Enroth said goalie Jet Magri "was solid in net, keeping the score close until we finally were able to break through in the third period with some goals."

Camden Hills led 40-25 in shots on goal, including 14-7 in the first period and 15-8 in the third, with both teams having 11 in the second period.

Magri made 23 saves in net for Camden Hills and Michael Brown 35 stops in goal for the Red Riots.

In a rare development, Camden Hills had no penalties in the game, while Orono (8-8-1) had three minor penalties for six minutes.

Camden Hills was 1-of-3 on the power play

In the first period, Camden Hills applied early pressure on the Orono net and, with just over five minutes played, scored on a rush from Robbins. Orono tied the game 1-1 on a net front goal from Michael Fowler.

Both teams played an even second period trying totally  the go-ahead goal but goalies Magri and Brown prevented scoring by making 11 saves each in net.

In the third period, Camden Hills scored two goals to jump to a 3-1 lead. Orono tallied a goal with 5:30 remaining to cut its deficit to 3-2. Shortly after, Camden Hills went on the power play and scored to get its two-goal cushion back.

Orono pulled its goalie for the extra attacker in the final minute but Camden Hills did a solid job of preventing the Red Riots from getting set up in the offensive zone and Camden Hills scored a late goal on an Orono turnover.

Feb. 18 game

Camden Hills took a 1-0 lead in the second period but it was mostly the hosts from that point.

MHW (9-6-2) held a 40-35 edge in shots, including 14-12, 13-11 and 13-12 during the three periods.

Magri made 20 saves and Zach Hand 13 in net for Camden Hills, while Tyler Plante made 33 saves for MHW.

Both teams were whistled for four minor penalties for eight minutes. The Windjammers were 0-of-4 and MHW 2-of-4 on power-play opportunities.

"We did not finish tonight in all aspects of the game and had several letdowns resulting in MHW scoring multiple goals in a short period of time," Enroth said. "We had numerous great chances to score. We turned the puck over when we had good possession, and too often we let them take the game to us in terms of the physical play. Against a Class A team like MHW that has some size and good first-line production you have to finish everything you do."

The Windjammers failed to capitalize on first-period scoring opportunities. However, just over a minute into the second period the Windjammers scored on Orne's rush to take the 1-0 advantage.

MHW got a power-play goal to tie the game and, several minutes later, scored a shorthanded goal to take a 2-1 edge. Toward the end of the second period MHW got a power-play goal to take a 3-1 cushion. Just 14 seconds later MHW tallied another goal to make it 4-1.
