After another terrific all-around season, which included racing to league and regional titles, the Camden Hills girls cross-country squad had its sights — as well as feet and legs — set on bringing home the school's first state Class B championship on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 27.

However, an old nemesis and the loss of two key runners conspired to foil the Windjammers' dreams.

Midcoast runners from Camden Hills, Oceanside of Thomaston/Rockland, Medomak Valley and Belfast competed in the state championship meet at Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast.

When the final student-athletes had crossed the course, all of the local runners had turned in strong all-around performances, with the Windjammer girls finishing second, for the second straight year, to Mount Desert Island.

Camden Hills competed without top-three runner, senior Emily Lopez, and had top-five runner Jacqueline Russell, a freshman, not be able to finish (she had been ill and could not finish the regional race as well). With those two standout runners healthy and competing the Windjammers might have surpassed the Trojans for the state championship. Windjammer coach Becky Flanagan said Lopez was unable to run, but did not specify the reason.

The Camden Hills girls again qualified for the New England championship meet, along with four local runners — Camden Hills' Brittany Bowman, Hannah Brownawell and Ben Trapani and Oceanside's Abby Hersom. Bowman was ninth, Hersom 20th and Brownawell 21st overall among 292 runners representing all three classes, while Trapani was sixth among 332nd runners.

The individual champion from each class and the next 22 top finishes as determined by their times in the combined Class A, B and C races are invited to represent the state. The Class A, B and C state champion teams also qualify, as well as the next three best team scores. Thus, the Camden Hills girls qualified, as they were fourth overall among 36 teams.

The New England meet will be Saturday, Nov. 10 at Twin Brook Recreation Facility in Cumberland, Maine. The boys race begins at 11:30 a.m. and girls at 12:30 p.m.
