During the regular season, the Camden Hills golf team accepted the challenge of each Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B opponent, beating all of them but one.

On Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 26, a few miles from their home course and battling overcast, rainy conditions, the Windjammers found a way to defeat all foes, including the one who handed them their lone loss, to win the coveted league championship.

Camden Hills captured the KVAC Class B title playing against Maranacook of Readfield, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle and Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield at the Rockland Golf Course. The Windjammers played the par-36 front nine holes at the course, located about three miles from their home course at the Samoset Resort Golf Club in Rockport.

Bangor was crowned the KVAC Class A champion and Camden Hills the KVAC Class B titlist in play Wednesday at RGC. Both teams receive automatic bids to the Maine Principals' Association state team championships on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Natanis.

In Class B Wednesday, Camden Hills shot a four-golfer, nine-hole stroke total of 166, to best runner-up Maranacook (168) by two strokes, third-place MCI (183) by 17 shots and fourth-place Lincoln Academy (190) by 24 strokes.

Maranacook was the only team to beat Camden Hills during the regular season.

Windjammer Daulton Wickenden and Lincoln Academy's Seward Matel were co-medalists as they shot 37. The two edged Luke Ruffing of Maranacook, who shot 38, for that distinction.

For Camden Hills, Wickenden shot 37, Julian Starbird 42, Drew Long 43, Drew Holt 44, Eddie Socker 48 and Oliver Bianchi 56.

Maranacook saw Ruffing shoot 38, Cam Brochu 42, Matt Delmar and Tucker Witham both 44, Bailey Clark 45 and Connor Ireland 49.

MCI saw Gavin Dugas shoot 40, Trevor Kitchin 45, Kael McCarthy 48, Dylan Watrous 50, Nate Tilton 62 and Dan Stevens 71.

For Lincoln Academy, Matel shot 37, Goran Johanson 42, Casey Poland 55, Sam Zaidi 56 and Luke Bibber 63.

In Class A Wednesday, golfers played the back nine holes (par 34), as Bangor finished at 160, Oxford Hills of South Paris 166 and Cony of Augusta 172. Oxford Hills' Mac Kim shot 38 as the medalist for the Class A group.

The final KVAC Class B regular-season records  — the top four teams qualify for league shootout — were: Marnacook 9-0, Camden Hills 8-1, MCI 7-2, Lincoln Academy 6-3, Leavitt of Turner 5-4, Mount View of Thorndike 4-5, Winslow 3-6, Belfast 2-7, Waterville 1-8 and Medomak Valley 0-9.

During the regular season, Camden Hills beat Medomak Valley, Belfast, Mount View and Leavitt 9-0, Waterville 8.5-0.5, Winslow 8-1, MCI 7-2, Lincoln Academy 6-3 and lost to Maranacook 6.5-2.5.

The KVAC state team and individual qualifier will be Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. (Camden Hills already has qualified by winning the league shootout), the state team championship on Saturday, Oct. 6 and the state individual championships on Saturday, Oct. 13. All those competition are at the Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.
