The Oceanside field hockey team got its 2012 season off to a positive start with a 2-0 home-opening victory over Erskine Academy of South China Aug. 31.

Single goals in both halves carried the day for the Mariners (1-0), along with solid goaltending.

For the Mariners, Phoebe Ferriaolo, with Hannah Plourde assisting, tallied a first-half goal and Lily Feltus, off a rebound, a second-half goal. Zoe Billington had two saves on two Eagle shots in the Oceanside cage.

Oceanside outshot Erskine Academy 20-4 and held a 9-1 edge in penalty corners.

“It was nice to finally get the first game of the season under our belts, and to win in front of our home crowd made it extra special,” said Oceanside coach Joanna Hall. “We really put a lot of pressure on the Erskin [Academy] defense, and they certainly did a good job keeping the ball out of the goal.”

Oceanside also won the jayvee game 2-0.
