Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-North Haven, has announced that she will not seek the Senate seat currently held by Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe.

In a March 7 press release, Pingree said she was humbled by and grateful for the support and encouragement she received in considering a Senate run.

“Although the prospect of running for and possibly serving in the United States Senate was very exciting, I believe I will best serve the people of Maine by running for re-election to the House,” said Pingree. “There is much at stake in this election, and in the end I had to put the best interests of the state and the country ahead of my own.”

Pingree was one of many politicians, both Republican and Democrat, who took out nomination papers after Snowe announced Feb. 28 that she would not seek re-election to the seat she has held since 1994.
