For the second year in a row dental offices across Knox County volunteered their day to see patients in need. Inspired by stories of successful dental volunteer days elsewhere in Maine, several dentists came together last year to create “Dentists With A Heart”, in honor of Valentine’s Day. On Feb. 3 the vision of a regional dental volunteer day was realized again. In that one day, 17 dentists, and about 45 hygienists, assistants, and receptionists volunteered and saw more than 100 Knox County Dental Program patients for restorative care, extractions, and cleanings. In total, they donated services valued at more than $46,000.

Participating dentists included Dr. Amy Campbell, Dr. Robert Day, Dr. Deborah Endl, Dr. Jonathan Goss, Dr. Michael Hersom, Dr. Jeffrey Jordan, Dr. Scott Kingsley, Dr. Arthur Medina, Dr. David Pier, Dr. Lawrence Singer, Dr. David Theriault, Dr. Randy Thivierge, and Dr. Edward Zanca. Knowing how great the demand was for volunteer dental care, four dentists practicing outside of the area, Dr. Brian Brunacini, Dr. Katherine Bunin-Stevenson, Dr. Jenny Fultz, and Dr. Gregory Sarka, joined their friends in Knox County to help as well.

Participating offices saw a significant number of patients in severe need of dental care, and in many cases their entire staff volunteered to make it happen. Most Knox County Dental Program patients must wait eight months to a year for restorative dental care, so the volunteer work that the participating offices did on this one day was an incredible help to neighbors in need. Local cupcake and candy makers, the Dessert Divas, helped the Knox County Health Clinic say thank you by donating custom cupcakes for each of the dental offices. Many thanks to all who were involved in this day, and to the many who volunteer throughout the year.
