When thousands of people convene on the edge of a hill to beat time down a toboggan chute onto the ice, magic is bound to build.

On Saturday, Feb. 11, under a lightly falling snow, competition for speed was keen, but the mood was light and creative, as friends set up temporary camps on the ice, cooked, ate, drank, danced, played Frisbee and hockey, fished, road bikes, strolled around, sat back on couches they hauled onto the middle of the pond, and talked and laughed their way through the day.

The temperatures were not too cold, and barely any frowns were spotted. It was a perfect day on a perfect pond.
