It was the Wingnuts, Spudrunner 3, Bull Hoss Fusiliers and Rumrunners who set the speeds this year at the 22nd Annual National Toboggan Championships held Feb. 10-12 at the Camden Snow Bowl.

Top speed down the chute was 8.86 seconds, reached by four-person team Bull Hoss Fusiliers, followed by the experimental Rumrunners, at 8.88 seconds. Spudrunner 3, with three people aboard, fetched 8.89 seconds, and the Two Wingnuts, representing the top two-man team, clocked the chute 8.94 seconds. The fastest female team was the Riverhouse, running 9.22 seconds. The fastest high school team was Night of the Living Sleds, at 9.4 seconds, and the fastest college team, Southern Comfort, at 9.29 seconds, was from Virginia Wesleyan College.

The best crafted toboggan was “Eleanor”, built by Doug Fagley, and the team with the best costume was Little Sled Riding Hood.

The chowder contest, held on Saturday, Feb. 11, ranked with Quarry Hill in first place, followed by Cappy’s Chowder House, and then the Waterfront Restaurant.

The chili contest, held Sunday, Feb. 12, was won by Midcoast School of Technology. In second place was Harbor Dogs, and in third, French and Brawn.
