Steve McMahon, owner of McMahon Builders LLC, takes great pride not only in every home he builds, but also in their surroundings and the beloved coast of Maine. On Sept. 17, McMahon, his employees and their families and friends for a total of 17 came together to clean up some of the coast of Midcoast Maine as part of the Maine Coastweek effort taking place Sept. 17 to Sept. 24.

“We were all surprised to see so much debris and garbage left on our beautiful beaches. It was important to us as a company, but also as individuals in this community to help keep our shores beautiful and pristine. Not to mention that it was a fun way for us to come together, while doing something so beneficial,” said McMahon in a news release.

Over 30 pounds of garbage was collected from Birch Point State Park in Owls Head. The group scoured a mile and a half of beachfront for any materials that did not belong there. Volunteers not only removed trash and debris, but part of the mission is to record the findings. The data collected help experts hone in on what the major sources of pollution to Maine’s coast are and work toward alleviating the problem.

McMahon and the rest of the volunteers plan to take part in the event each year. For more information on Maine Coastweek go to maine.gov/spo/coastal/projects/coastweek.
