A memorial gift was presented to the Rockland Police and Rockland Fire and Emergency Medical Services departments at the Sept. 7 city council meeting.

Andrew Lappin of Waldoboro and Carole Mathews of Camden presented a framed print of the Jamie Wyeth “September 11th” painting with an inscribed plaque. The gift was presented as a memorial to Andrew Lappin’s father, Kevin Lappin, and as a gift of gratitude for the dedicated service of the Rockland police and EMS specialists who assisted Mathews on the evening of Kevin Lappin’s passing five years ago. Kevin Lappin was not only a local business owner and contractor, he was also very active in the Midcoast community. He directed several plays at the local high schools, co-founded and performed with the jazz and swing quartet Fascinatin’ Rhythm, and also performed in community theater.

The Rockland police chief and officers as well as the Rockland fire chief and members of the Rockland Fire/EMS Department were present to accept the gift and were honored with a standing ovation. The memorial gift also marked the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedy.

The picture has been hung in the Rockland Police Department lobby.
