The Camden Hills Regional High School Visual and Performing Arts “Student of the Month” for September is awarded to Emily Sargent.

Sargent has been involved in nearly every aspect of the arts program at Camden Hills Regional High School. She has been a member of the band, chorus, Chamber Singers, District III Honors Choir and the 2011 All-State Chorus. In addition, she has performed in many of the school musicals; this year holding the role of Christine in the production of “Phantom of the Opera.” Although Sargent has been very involved in music, her primary love has been the study of dance.

Sargent began studying dance at age 4. She has been studying ballet, tap and contemporary dance at the Rockport Dance Conservatory earning high gold and silver medals at the Danner’s Inc. Regional Dance Competitions. In studying dance, she has loved working with the people involved, the friendships and the sense of “community” that has developed. Recently, her study of vocal music at the high school has led her to combine her skills as a vocalist with her love of dance.

Upon graduation, Sargent would like to become a kindergarten or elementary school teacher. Although music and dance will not be her main focus, she plans to continue to enjoy them both throughout her collegiate and adult life.

Sargent’s advice to young performing arts students: “Dive right in to the arts. Try a bunch of stuff and find what you love to do. You will develop some great friends and learn about yourself. Follow your passions and you will discover that the arts are really cool!”
