Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St., will host a children’s craft workshop with local children’s author and illustrator Melissa Sweet Saturday, Sept. 24 beginning at 2 p.m. All budding artists are invited to hear local artist Sweet talk about her latest book, “Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade,” and to participate in a puppet activity. This event is free and includes all materials.

Sweet has illustrated nearly 100 children’s books, from board books to picture books and nonfiction titles. Her collages and paintings have appeared in The New York Times, Martha Stewart Living, Madison Park Greetings, Smilebox and for eeBoo Toys, which have garnered the Oppenheim and Parents Choice Awards. She has written and illustrated three books; the other two are “Tupelo Rides the Rails” and “Carmine: A Little More Red,” a New York Times Best Illustrated for 2005.

This combination author reading and art workshop concludes the Maine Authors & Illustrators series sponsored by the Rose and Samuel Rudman Library Trust, Friends of the Rockland Public Library and the Reading Corner. For more information, contact children’s librarian Jean Young at 594-0310.
