On Sept. 4, 176 registered riders on 120 motorcycles took part in the second annual Torch Ride to benefit Special Olympics Maine and raised more than $10,000.

The Torch Ride is an annual motorcycle ride hosted by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and UBM-Knox County.

The ride left the Owls Head Transportation Museum at 9 a.m. with approximately 72 motorcycles and traveled Route 1 to Belfast. In Belfast it picked up another 26 bikes and took Route 3 to Texas Roadhouse in Augusta where it took an hour break and picked up another 22 bikes before heading back to the Owls Head Transportation Museum for a barbecue. Also along for the ride were 24 athletes from Knox County. They were transported in a stretch limousine and van provided by Sterling Limousine of Union. The athletes led the pack of motorcycles from Owls Head and back again.

Texas Roadhouse of Augusta partnered with the Torch Ride this year in support of Special Olympics Maine. They opened their restaurant and put on extra staff to provide a warm and cheerful welcome to the athletes and riders. All food and drinks were provided to the athletes at no charge. The group was also greeted by athletes from Kennebec County. Texas Roadhouse also hosted a fundraiser event for Special Olympics Maine on Sept. 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. Anyone with a flier for this event got 10 percent off their total meal purchase donated back to Special Olympics Maine. Fliers were available from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Trooper Wesbrock who assisted Knox County Officer Tim McFarland for the escort up and back from the museum and all the law enforcement agencies along the way that assisted at intersections. The ride stretched out for 1.3 miles and covered about 140 miles traveling through four counties. Police agencies from around the state were represented at the ride as well as coming from as far away as Aroostook County.

Torch Ride organizers also thanked KDK LLC out of Thomaston for providing the event shirts and donating athlete shirts to all the athletes who participated from Knox and Kennebec counties.

A huge thank-you to all the sponsors who donated time, money, raffle items and services to make this year’s ride a success. For a complete list of sponsors visit torchride.info and click on the sponsor link.
