The following is a synopsis of the 2011 Camden Hills Regional High School girls varsity soccer squad:

Team: Camden Hills girls soccer.

Coach/years coached current team: Meredith Messer, 16th year.

Last year’s record/playoff information: 12-2, No. 2 in Eastern Class B. Defeated No. 7 John Bapst of Bangor 3-1 in the quarterfinals and lost to No. 3 Presque Isle 2-0 in the semifinals. Also won the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B championship with a 3-2 overtime win over Leavitt of Turner.

Roster: Seniors Lindsay Bumbalo, Jackay Richards, Mia Maddox and Erin Pierce; juniors Kristina Alex, Caroline Matteo, Autumn Coyle, Christine Forcillo, Cailland Sweeting, Haley Williams, Sarah Scott, Emily Lopez and Lexi Doudera; and sophomores Addie Drinkwater, Lea Smith, Hannah Corney and Kaylen Williams.

Graduation losses: Heather Eaton, Marnie Merrill and Julia Gowesky.

Significant impact players: Bumbalo, Richards, Alex, Matteo and Sweeting.

Team strengths: Four juniors (Alex, Matteo, Sweeting and Doudera) have played together since they were freshmen. Bumbalo enters her third season as the team’s starting goalie.

Team goals: To finish in the top five in Eastern Class B and to have a “healthy postseason performance,” said coach Messer.

Top league opponents: Morse of Bath, Maranacook of Readfield and Medomak Valley.

Outlook: The Windjammers not only lost three strong seniors to graduation in Eaton, Merrill and Gowesky, but one of the most potent schoolgirl goal scorers in the state — Melanie Vangel — a sophomore who transferred to Cape Elizabeth.

While losing someone of Vangel’s talents is a significant blow, coach Messer believes in her team and has a strong core of juniors who she expects to lead the Windjammers back to the Eastern Class B playoffs.

“As long as we get better every day and execute better every game then we should have a very fun and successful season,” Messer said.
