This week’s wet weather is bringing up a variety of mushrooms in lawns and woods, and a local expert will talk about their various uses on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Gibbs Library in Washington.

David Spahr, a photographer and mycologist who lives in Washington, is the author of “Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms of New England and Eastern Canada.”

Besides tasty cookery, many mushrooms have properties that can be used to treat cancer, AIDS and other diseases. Spahr has collected and photographed mushrooms for more than 30 years, and has a website devoted to this work: mushroom-collecting.com

The free event at Gibbs Library is sponsored by the Midcoast Audubon Society, which presents various programs for the public year ’round. For more information, call 832-5584.
