If one is searching for a safe, low-impact exercise program to follow all nine months of one’s pregnancy, try coming over to the Penobscot Bay YMCA.

New this fall and exclusively offered in the Midcoast area is a pre-natal water aerobics class. Water jogging, and aqua aerobics are some of the best exercises to perform while pregnant. Exercising in water is ideal for pregnant women because the water’s buoyancy requires one to support only 50 percent of one’s body weight, it reduces the risk of stress-related injuries, and the compression of the water is soothing on joints and muscles that are stressed by the added bulk pregnancy. The water’s temperature also keeps one from overheating during a workout. The class also improves emotional well being, cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility, strengthening spine stabilization and pre/post childbirth.

Register now at the Penobscot Bay YMCA, 116 Union St., Rockport or by calling the Y at 236-3375. Pre-natal water aerobics is offered in the Therapy Pool, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:15 to 9 a.m. For more information and costs contact Michael Fournier, Aquatics Director, 236-3375 ext. 222.
