For anyone interested in being a companion to hospice patients, Coastal Family Hospice Volunteers will begin a 9-week training class starting Monday, Sept. 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the organization’s office in Rockport.

While the 30-hour course is comprehensive, the aim is simple: to prepare anyone to walk into an end-of-life situation and be poised, present, and ready to help. Applications are due Sept. 1.

Hospice care embraces the whole person and his or her family during a terminal illness, providing spiritual, social, emotional, and physical support. While the bulk of professional hospice services in this area is provided through Kno-Wal-Lin Homecare and Hospice, Coastal Family Hospice is the community’s link to volunteer assistance and bereavement support.
