Virginia Alley was crowned the 2011 Maine Wild Blueberry Queen at the coronation ceremony Sunday evening, Aug. 21 at the Union Fair & Maine Wild Blueberry Festival.

Kayla Santheson of Waldoboro was named Crown Princess, and Meagan Marie Luce of Washington earned Miss Congeniality honors.

Alley, of Cushing, is a 2008 homeschool graduate. She participated in the National Technical Honor Society, honors choir, soccer, tennis and band. Alley enjoys spending time with family and friends, music, working on trucks, reading, and volunteering in the community. She is currently employed as a produce associate at Hannaford and an apprentice technician at VIP. She attends the University of Southern Maine and her future plans include earning a degree in music education to become a director, having a successful instrumental program in Maine.

Alley was sponsored by Cherryfield Foods and Maine Wild Blueberry Company.

Santheson is a 2010 graduate of Medomak Valley High School, where she participated in softball, basketball, the fall musical, student council as the class treasurer and Peers Assisting with Sincerity. Santheson enjoys playing softball, teaching young girls to play softball, traveling, shopping, spending time with friends and family and volunteering in the community. She is currently employed at Spear’s Farms. She attends St. Joseph’s College and her future plans include earning a degree in nursing and specializing in pediatrics.

Luce is a 2011 graduate of Medomak Valley High School, where she participated in yearbook, cheerleading and cross-country running. Luce enjoys downhill skiing, swimming and volunteering in the community. She is also a Maine Lobster Festival volunteer. She is currently employed as a certified nursing assistant. Her future plans include attending the Capilo Institute of Cosmetology in the fall, while taking some college-level nursing or veterinary courses.

Luce was sponsored by Spruce Mountain Blueberries.

For the ceremony, the blueberry princesses were driven to the stage in classic cars. They each answered questions about blueberries and harvesting.

Outgoing Blueberry Queen Bethany Snow described her reign in rhyme:

“My new friends Dale and Larry
They took a chance on me
And taught me much about
Maine wild blueberries
A day with a rake in the field
Gave me firsthand knowledge
That a blueberry farmer deserves
Admiration, respect and homage”
