Harbor Square Gallery and the Muir Garden for Contemporary Sculpture will sponsor a special preview screening of “Cabot Lyford: Portrait of a Man as Artist,” a new film by filmmaker Dale Schierholt, Sunday, Aug. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Strand Theatre, 345 Main St.

The subject of Schierholt’s latest film portrait is revered and critically acclaimed New England sculptor Cabot Lyford. The film takes viewers inside Lyford’s New Harbor studio as he works and talks about his art and life. Lyford, 86, creates in stone, bronze and wood and derives much of his inspiration from the natural world and the female human form. His sculptures can be found in many museums, private collections and public installations throughout the United States and Europe.

This special advance screening is a unique opportunity to see Schierholt’s “director’s cut” as he prepares the film for release as part of the celebrated Maine Masters series. Cabot is one of New England’s most important sculptors, said Tom O’Donovan, owner of Harbor Square Gallery, “and we are pleased to be a part of this special event.”

Suggested donation for the screening is $10; proceeds will help fund the film’s distribution through Maine Masters. A reception for Lyford will be held at Harbor Square Gallery, located just across and down the street, after the screening. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the artist as well as the filmmaker. Harbor Square Gallery, the primary exhibitor of Lyford’s work, will have several of the artist’s pieces on display during the reception.
