The downtown Farnsworth Art Museum will hosting a book launch and signing for “Sammy in the Sky,” written by Barbara Walsh and illustrated by artist Jamie Wyeth, Wednesday, Aug. 10 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the museum’s Victorian garden on Elm Street, between Main and Union.

“Sammy in the Sky” is a deeply affecting tale of love, loss and remembrance. When illness cuts short the life of Sammy, the best hound dog in the whole wide world, his girl’s family keeps his spirit alive by celebrating his love of chasing wind-blown bubbles, keeping loyal guard at night and offering his velvety fur for endless pats and tummy scratches. Wyeth’s illustrations, infused with his realist style and lifelong fondness for dogs, radiate the joy and sadness of this heartening and lovingly rendered story written by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Walsh.

The internationally known painter, whose work is on view in the Farnsworth’s Wyeth Center, endlessly sketched his family dog when he was a boy he and has continued to portray animals in his work. He has illustrated two previous picture books, “The Stray” and “Cabbages and Kings.” Walsh, who lives in Maine, has worked for newspapers and magazines in Florida, Massachusetts, Maine and Ireland. “Sammy in the Sky” was inspired by her family’s first dog, who died in 2003. She also is the author of “August Gale: A Father and Daughter’s Journey into the Storm,” an adult biography and memoir book.

The book signing will be limited to “Sammy in the Sky”; no other merchandise will be signed by the artist. The book will be available for purchase at the Museum Store. For more information, call 596-5789.
