On Sunday, Aug. 7, Jim Matlack of Rockport will speak at the Midcoast Friends Meeting House (Quakers) at 12:30 p.m. Under the title “The Palestinian Plight,” he will report on a recent two-week trip to Palestine and Israel with a question time to follow.

The Meeting House is located at 77 Belvedere Road in Damariscotta a short distance away from Route 1.

Matlack has long served with Quaker agencies and has traveled seven times to Israel and Palestine. He retired in 2005 as director of the Washington, D.C. Office for the American Friends Service Committee. Soon after he and his wife moved to Rockport where he is active in the Camden Conference.

On Matlack’s recent visit to the Middle East most of the time was spent in West Bank and with Palestinian leaders and civil society groups although he also met with veteran Israeli peace activists. Three nights were spent in home stays with Palestinian families in West Bank villages. In addition to direct experiences during the trip, Matlack will also speak to the overall political and diplomatic situation in the Palestinian/Israeli conflict.
