Juvenile fiction author Robin Russell will lead a writing workshop for young people age 8 to 17 Tuesday, Aug. 9 at 10 a.m. at Rockland Public Library, 80 Union St. At 11 a.m., she will discuss and read from her Summer Island series of mystery and adventure on a Maine island.

During the writing workshop, the author will discuss showing, not telling — a strategy authors use to make their work more engaging and sophisticated. It is what allows a writer to paint a picture in the reader’s mind, said the Seattle-based author and writing teacher.

“Summer Island: A Prince in Peril” tells the story of five friends whose summer island vacation is interrupted by a fleeing African prince who is in fear for his life after his parents were killed and overthrown. Now the perpetrators pursue him, and five friends are this young prince’s only hope.
