Summer is in full swing. School is out, some families are hitting the road for vacation, and life seems to take a step back and slow down for a while. Unfortunately, summer is also the time when the need for blood kicks into high gear. No school means no school blood drives, and more road trips mean more car accidents that may require lifesaving blood transfusions.

Pen Bay Medical Center is sponsoring a summer blood drive Monday, Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Physician Building, Conference Rooms C and D. There is a critical need for type O positive and O negative blood, as well as A negative and B negative, but all blood types are needed.

To all Red Sox fans: come in to donate blood in August and donors will walk away with a Red Sox/ Red Cross T-shirt.

To schedule an appointment, call the Pen Bay Medical Center Blood Bank at 596-8770 or the American Red Cross at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE. The drive is open to the public. One must have a photo ID at the time of donation, as one will not be able to donate without it. Appointments are recommended, but persons who want to donate without an appointment will be accommodated as time and staff allow.
