The Waldo Theatre, Main Street/Route 220, has opened its summer musical “Little Shop of Horror.” Final performances will be Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m., Aug. 5 through 7.

Based on the Roger Corman cult black-and-white low budget movie of the same name, “Little Shop of Horrors” tells the story of how fame and fortune affect the lives of those who work in Mushnik’s Flower Shop on Skid Row. The arrival of a strange new breed of plant seems innocent enough, but the plant has world domination in mind. The ending seems tragic, but the finale brings everyone back for one more song.

The central characters are being brought to the stage by Todd Martin (Mr. Mushnik), Shane Lavoie (Seymour) and Meredith Batley (Audrey), all from the Thomaston area.  Joining them are many familiar faces as well as a large number of  newcomers to the Waldo stage. Waldo Theatre favorite Brad Fillion is the voice of the evil Audrey II, with Kenny Paradis running the puppets onstage. Orin Scrivello, DDS (Bill Coombs) will be surrounded by the backup singing Do-Wops, played by  Tabitha Ordway, Kayleigh Hearth, Leah Cook and, making their Waldo debuts, Faith Stevens and Hilary Harkins. Justin Gillman is joined onstage by his father Jeff Gillman, veteran of many Waldo Theatre productions.

Aspen Jones and newcomer Elizabeth Vega (newcomer) play two very, er, professional ladies of Skid Row; and Sue Hunt, who has not been on the Waldo stage since high school, will lend her voice to the opening and closing solos. Sam Inman plays opportunistic horticulturalist Patrick Martin. The Skid Row kids are all seasoned Waldo Theatre actors — Noah Jones, Quincy Coombs, Kayleigh Tolley, Katherine Tolley, Emma Tolly and Amelia Rosko. Making his puppeteer debut will be Tristan Hearth as Audrey II, Pod 1; he is very excited to be playing the smallest plant.

“Little Shop” is the third summer musical directed by Sue Ghoreyeb and Sean Fleming for the Waldo. Tickets are $15, $12.50 for students and senior citizens. They available via the Waldo (832-6060), at Waltz Pharmacy and online at thewaldo.org.
