Merryspring Nature Center’s children’s gardening program Roots, Shoots, Veggies, and Fruits continues each Wednesday from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

This program is open to all children and is free of charge. In addition to tending, watering, weeding, and harvesting the various gardens, each day’s theme centers on a fun and educational aspect of gardens and the natural world that interacts with them. Parents should note that while all children are welcome to attend and help in the garden, many of the concepts behind the activities are geared toward children ages 7-13.

August schedule:

Wednesday, Aug. 3: Critters in the Garden. Gardens are rich with wildlife! Some are good and some are pesky. Join the Children’s Garden Club to learn all about garden critters. The group will make places for spiders to build their beautiful webs, decorate toad homes, make hummingbird feeders and, of course, spend a little time tending the garden.

Wednesday, Aug. 10: No garden program.

Wednesday, Aug. 17: Garden art. Take a look at the artsy side of the garden. Spend the afternoon learning how to use plants and objects from nature to make your own art supplies. Learn about nature journaling and nature photography. Bring cameras and notebooks for this afternoon of artistic fun.

Wednesday, Aug. 24: Insects. Curious about bugs? Where do those little holes in the leaves come from? Are there really bugs that are good for the garden? Learn all about these insect friends as the group searches the garden for them. The group will make bug suckers to collect and observe specimens. Come and get to know all about the good, the bad, and the ugly side of bugs.

Wednesday, Aug. 31: Harvest Day. It’s that time of year! Join the Merryspring Children’s Garden Club for a day of harvest. Pick veggies and herbs and make personal pizzas. Pick lettuce greens to make refreshing salads, and have herbal tea from the medicine garden. It will be a day full of fun and food.
