Northport Music Theater’s High School Theater Camp will present “Into the Woods Junior” Friday through Sunday, July 15 through 17 at NMT, Route 1. Performances will be 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

“Into the Woods,” a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, won several Tony Awards, including Best Score and Best Book. The Junior version is Act I of the original musical, which is a bit more pleasant as most of the cast is killed off in Act II. However, since Act II has a few favorite songs, the NMT campers will present a second act of favorite Sondheim tunes including “Moments in the Woods” and “You are Not Alone” plus musical selections from other Sondheim musicals such as “Sweeney Todd” and “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.”

The story of “Into the Woods” intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and follows them further as they pursue various quests within the woods. The main characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Riding Hood (with Little Red played by Alice Limoges and Jordan Richmond as the wolf); Jack and the Beanstalk (Ian Doran with Tori Arau as his mother); Rapunzel (Lindsay Taylor); and Cinderella (Louisa Klemperer), tied together by a more original story involving a baker (Morgan Cates) and his wife (Devin Fletcher) and their quest to begin a family. The plot is controlled by the central character of the witch (Kate Rich) with constant commentary by the narrator (Hannah Wincklhofer). Cinderella’s family is played by Keira Haining as the stepmother; and real sisters Melissa and Amy Cushman play the two step sisters. Connor Mushlit plays a variety of roles as Cinderella’s father, Rapunzel’s prince, a mysterious man and also camp set builder. Eliza Boetsch also plays an integral part within a myriad of roles such as Cinderella’s mother, Little Red’s granny and the Steward. Katie McMorrow will play Milky White the cow.

The NMT camp is directed by Kim Murphy, Derrick Lacasse and Emily Widdoes. The performances will be accompanied by Joani Mitchell on piano and Orion Krause on percussion.

Tickets are $12 each, general admission. They may be purchased online at northportmusictheater.com with a credit card or at the door with cash or check. Reservations are strongly recommended by calling 338-8383. All facilities are handicapped accessible.
