On July 30, Rockport Automotive will join with other auto repair and collision shops across the United States to give a car to a deserving person in the community.

The shop is taking nominations through July 15. At the end of the month they will hand the keys to a fully repaired and inspected 2001 Volkswagen Passat to someone who gives back to the community and is in need of a car.

The car has been completely detailed by Sam Dyer of Dyer’s Detail. It comes with a new set of tires, courtesy of VIP Auto Parts and Service, and a one-year membership to AAA Northern New England.

Rockport Automotive owner Steve Dixson said he works with a consulting group named Management Success, based in California, which provides business management seminars to its clients. The group, which includes shops all over the United States, came up with the idea of giving a car away at a recent meeting and thus the Wheels to Prosper program was born. The plan is to make this an annual event.

So far, 11 shops across the United States have signed on and will each be giving a car away on the same day at the exact same time, Dixson said. A total of 32 shops have expressed interest and more may sign on in the coming days, he said.

“This is somebody that is financially having a difficult time and is still giving back to the community the best they can and is still working hard and working hard to make this a better place for people around them,” he said.

The person must live in Knox or Waldo county. He or she must be by nature a giver and active in one or more forms of community service. In addition, the nominee would find it difficult to procure or replace an existing automobile given his or her current financial situation.

The shop has received four nominations so far, but is looking for a whole lot more.

“I’d like to have a car for each one, it breaks your heart to read these [recommendation letters],” Dixson said.

Dixson has no say in who wins the car, he said. The person will be selected by four members of the West Bay Rotary — Gary Walker, Mark Masterson, Jan Campbell and Sandy Cox. Dixson, who also is a member of West Bay Rotary, will serve as an advisor.

To nominate an individual, submit a letter of recommendation by going to the “Contact” page on the Rockport Automotive website (rockportautomotive.com) and be sure to put “Wheels to Prosper” in the subject line. Or submissions can be mailed to: Rockport Automotive, Attn: Wheels to Prosper, 271 Commercial St., Rockport, ME 04856.
