Carolyn R. Bullerwell, 91, passed away peacefully June 21, 2011. The oldest of eight children, she was born on Vinalhaven Island. She graduated from Vinalhaven High School in 1938. Carolyn completed training for her registered nurse diploma in 1940. Carolyn advanced to senior surgical nurse at Portland General Hospital. She loved working as a surgical nurse. As she would say, “we would get in there, figure out what was wrong and fix it!” She was a talented and caring nurse.

Carolyn married Clarence “Classy” Kneeland in 1942. Their love was what stories are made of. She followed him to Colorado for his military training and saw him off to serve his country. Carolyn and Clarence were blessed with one son, William F. Kneeland, whom she called her “miracle baby.” She was devastated when Classy passed away, but she persevered and carried on with life.

Carolyn was blessed by love again with Judge Harris Bullerwell. They married in 1962 in Alaska. She loved telling adventure stories about her time there. She showed Alaska what “this little lady from Maine was all about.” After leaving Alaska, Carolyn and “J” lived out retirement together in Oklahoma and Florida before returning to her beloved Maine. She was active in church her entire life, volunteered for numerous organizations, and vigorously supported conservative politics.

Later in life, she moved to Montana to be close to her grandson, Dr. Camden Kneeland and his family. She loved spending time with her two great-grandchildren, Brodie and Lainey. They were immeasurably blessed by the time they spent with her, coloring pictures, telling stories and holding hands. Her final months were spent laughing, sharing memories, enjoying the company of friends, and loving on her great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Leslie B. and Hazel R. Dyer; her brothers, Leslie Dyer Jr. and George Dyer; and husbands, Clarence Kneeland and Harris Bullerwell.

She is survived by her son, William Kneeland of Oklahoma City; grandson, Dr. Camden Kneeland and his wife, Valerie, of Kalispell, Mont.; her great-grandchildren, Broderick and Corina Kneeland of Kalispell, Mont.; her brothers, Joesph Dyer of Suffield, Conn., Phillip Dyer of Vinalhaven, Richard Dyer of Warren and Edward Dyer of Fairfield, Ohio; and a sister, Ada Williams of Rockland.

Services will be held July 5 at 10 a.m. at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive.
